Chitosan is an all natural product which is derived from the polysaccharide chitin.
It is found in the exo-skeletons of shrimp, crabs and other shellfish and has the unique ability to attach itself to lipids or fats. There are no calories in Chitosan since it is a non-digestible fiber.
Chitosan attaches itself to fat in the stomach before it is digested, thus trapping the fat and preventing its absorption by the digestive tract. Fat in turn binds to the Chitosan fiber, forming a mass which the body cannot absorb, and which is then eliminated by the body. Chitosan fiber, (from chitin ), differs from other fibers in that it possesses a positive ionic charge, which gives it the ability to bond chemically with the negatively charged lipids, fats and bile acids.
Chitosan has been used for over two decades and a 1994 report from ARS Medicina (Helsinki), it was stated that test subjects lost 8% of body weight over a four week period while using Chitosan. Other than its fat binding action, Chitosan remains virtually inactive while inside the human body.
